Pea gravel, often used for driveways, paths, (or garden surfaces in general) is a versatile material with a lot of benefits: first of all, it's permeable, so water is absorbed and drains well through it. It's also soft, textural, and above all, inexpensive. The gravel is , well ,the size of peas (hence the name), and rounded in 1/8" to 3/8" dimensions and come in greys, tan, and white and sometimes a mix. To install, first use 2" of crushed rock below, and add 2-3" of gravel on top of the crushed rock. An edge is important with pea gravel to contain it and keep a clean look. The main thing is finding a good source for the stone, and installing it. Local nurseries often have more variety with their mixes. Be on the lookout for a mix called 'Delaware Blend' --it's a neutral mix that goes with everything.
