Staghorn sumac is an elegant understated deciduous shrub that performs well year round and needs very little love to do it's thing. You probably see it by the side of highways and don't even take note of it, but it's crazy hearty and does well in soils that other plants can't tolerate. It's not ideal for a small garden because it's vigorous and will spread. It turns a fantastic orange/red in the fall. During the winter the squiggly branching and red fruits (drupes) have a Dr. Seuss-like quality.
